We live in a suburban community of Los Angeles, California. Our chickens are of various breeds, including Barred Rock, Arucanas, Silkie and Polish varieties. We usually have at least one hatching each spring and raise the chicks to adolescence before taking our pick of the litter and giving away the roosters and extra hens to good homes or to our local feed store, where they are sold at a price high enough to avoid them being bought as a food bird.
The new chicks are 10 days old now. There are thirteen of them, plus the three from the earlier hatch. They are kept separated now because the larger chicks would just use the babies for traction.
