HELLO! My name is David and I am 23 years old. I am deaf and disabled with athetoid cerebral palsy. I live in a group home for disabled in Costa Mesa California.
I am in a wheelchair and I do not talk or use my hands. I use a headpointer to type on a device called a dynavox to communicate. The dynavox is how I put messages and chat on my computer. If we chat, please wait for my response. I'm not fast so thank you for being patient. Most of my friends on here let me private message them if a lot of people are in the room. I have found that people either don't know how to act around someone with severe disability or they are very comfortable and treat me like anyone else. Obviously that's what I would prefer! If it makes you uncomfortable, I'm sorry for you.. just don't add me as a friend and don't talk to me if you can't handle it. I AM VERY SHY! I get nervous talking to girls. I am also very polite and respectful. It is easier for me to talk to girls on Stickam though, lol! I am not allowed to use a cam here because it is against the rules. They call it a privacy invasion because I share a room with 2 other guys. People ask me questions about my disability. Instead of answering every time, I tell people look at my profile.. these are the answers.. 1. Were you born this way? Yes, I have been deaf and had cerebral palsy all my life. I am used to it because I have not known what it is to not have it. It is a part of who I am. 2. How do you talk/chat if you can't use your hands? I wear a headpointer. It is basically a stick attached to my forehead with a little helmet thing. I type on a device called dynavox that's hooked up to my computer. If I want to say something out loud I type it and hit speak. The dynavox speaks it for me with a synth voice. If I want to put it on the computer I hit send and it sends to the computer and I can put it in chat or email. The dynavox has word prediction and sentences built in to make it faster for me to write something. I understand sign language but obviously I cannot speak it because I cannot use my hands. But you can sign to me to talk. 3. Are you retarded? NO!!! I am as smart as anyone. Just because I don't talk doesn't mean I am retarded. The brain damage I have because of CP is to the parts that affect my hearing, how I move and my speech. 4. What exactly IS Cerebral Palsy? This explanation is copied from a website. There are different kinds, and I have the athetoid kind.. About 10 percent of people with cerebral palsy have athetoid cerebral palsy. Athetoid cerebral palsy is caused by damage to the cerebellum. These areas of the brain are responsible for processing the signals that enable smooth, coordinated movements as well as maintaining body posture. Damage to these areas may cause a person to develop involuntary, purposeless movements, especially in the face, arms, and trunk. These involuntary movements often interfere with speaking, feeding, reaching, grasping, and other skills requiring coordinated movements. For example, involuntary grimacing and tongue thrusting may lead to swallowing problems, drooling and slurred speech. The movements often increase during periods of emotional stress and disappear during sleep. In addition, people with athetoid cerebral palsy often have low muscle tone and have problems maintaining posture for sitting and walking. On a final note, my sister's name is Nichole - she is awesome and the best sister in the world. Can you tell she made this profile for me? :-) |
