Basic Structure of the
Texas Hold’em is one of most popular type of poker game and consists of multiple players.
Every player at the table is dealt three community cards known as the flop. Then two additional single cards are dealt known as the turn and the river.
In Hold Em, players are judged on the best five card hand they can assemble from their two hole cards and the five community cards.
A player's best hand may use any number of their own hole cards, or even none at all. Please see below for the basic structure of the game.
- Small blind and big blind players must place a bet if they wish to participate in the round.
- The first round of cards are dealt giving each player two cards face down.

Players have the option to check, call, raise or fold.
- Check – When a player does not want to raise a wager.
- Call – After another player has raised or placed a wager into the pot total, in order to stay in the game you must call. By calling you are matching the amount of chips added by the player that had raised.
- Raise – When a player adds a wager to the current pot total.
- Fold – When a player no longer wants to participate in the round. They lose the chips they have already added into the pot total.
- After all the players have had the chance to check, call, raise or fold; three community cards are placed face up on the table which can be used by all the players in addition to the cards they have at hand.
- Then the second round of betting begins and players are able to check, call, raise or fold.
- After the second round of betting has completed, a fourth community card also known as the turn is dealt face up on the table.
- Players have the option to check, call, raise or fold (Call will only be available if a player has raised the pot).
- Then the third round of betting begins and players will be able to check, call, raise or fold.
- After the third round of betting has completed, a fifth and final card also known as the river is dealt face up on the table.
- Then the fourth and final round of betting begins which ends the round.
Types of Hands (From highest to lowest)
Royal Flush – Is the highest form of a five card hand possible.
The five card hand must consist of a 10, J, Q, K, and all cards must be matching suits.
Straight Flush – Is the second highest form of a five card hand possible.
Cards must have five cards with all five cards as the same suit (all five hearts, all five clubs, etc.)
and the cards must be in a consecutive order (IE. 2,3,4,5,6 or 7,8,9,T,J).
Four of a Kind – When a player has four of the same ranking cards, meaning the player has one of each of the suits of that ranking
(IE. 6 of diamond, 6 of heart, 6 of spade, and 6 of clubs).
Full House – Three matching cards in addition to one pair of matching cards consisting of a total of five cards.
Flush – Five cards that have all the same suit. A flush can consists of both low and high cards as long as the player has a total of five matching suits.
Straight – Five sequential ranking cards that contain at least two different suits
(A player with a straight consisting of all the same suits does not have a straight, but a straight flush).
Three of a Kind – Consists of three cards of the same rank plus an additional two cards that do not match any of the other cards.
Two Pair – Consists of two pairs of the same cards plus an additional card that is not of rank.
If more than one player has a two pair, the highest of the pair wins.
One Pair – Also known as two of a kind is when a player has one pair of cards of the same rank in addition to three other
cards neither of the same rank nor the same rank of each other.
High Card – Five card hand with no pairs of matching rankings and do not contain any of the above mentioned five card hands.

Glossary
