ON POINT WATCHDOG
PROTECTION
& P.I. SERVICES
Private detectives and investigators use many methods to determine the
facts in a variety of matters. In all cases, private detectives and investigators
assist attorneys, businesses, and the public with legal, financial, and
personal problems.
Our private detectives and investigators offer many services, including
executive, corporate, and personal protection; pre-employment verification;
and individual background profiles. They investigate computer crimes, such
as identity theft, harassing e-mails, and illegal downloading of copyrighted
material. They also provide assistance in civil liability and personal injury
cases, insurance claims and fraud, child custody and protection cases,
missing persons cases, and premarital screening. We are also sometimes
hired to investigate individuals to prove or disprove infidelity.
Our detectives and investigators are trained to perform physical
surveillance. They may observe a site, such as the home of a subject, from
an inconspicuous location or a vehicle. They continue the surveillance,
which is often carried out using still and video cameras, binoculars, and a
cell phone, until the desired evidence is obtained.
Detectives also may perform computer database searches or work with
someone who does. Computers allow investigators to quickly obtain
massive amounts of information on individuals’ prior arrests, convictions,
and civil legal judgments; telephone numbers; motor vehicle registrations;
association and club memberships; and other matters.
The duties of private detectives and investigators depend on the needs of
their clients. In cases for employers that involve fraudulent workers’
compensation claims, for example, investigators may carry out long-term
covert observation of subjects. If an investigator observes a subject
performing an activity that contradicts injuries stated in a worker’s
compensation claim, the investigator would take video or still photographs
to document the activity and report it to the client.
Our private detectives and investigators often specialize. Those who focus
on intellectual property theft, for example, investigate and document acts
of piracy, help clients stop illegal activity, and provide intelligence for
prosecution and civil action. Other investigators specialize in developing
financial profiles and asset searches. Their reports reflect information
gathered through interviews, investigation and surveillance, and research,
including review of public documents.
Specialists Include:
Legal investigators specialize in cases involving the courts and are
normally employed by law firms or lawyers. They frequently assist in
preparing criminal defenses, locating witnesses, serving legal documents,
interviewing police and prospective witnesses, and gathering and
reviewing evidence. Legal investigators also may collect information on the
parties to the litigation, take photographs, testify in court, and assemble
evidence and reports for trials.
Corporate investigators conduct internal and external investigations for
corporations. In internal investigations, they may investigate drug use in the
workplace, ensure that expense accounts are not abused, or determine
whether employees are stealing merchandise or information. External
investigations are typically done to uncover criminal schemes originating
outside the corporation, such as theft of company assets through
fraudulent billing of products by suppliers.
Financial investigators may be hired to develop confidential financial
profiles of individuals or companies that are prospective parties to large
financial transactions. These investigators often are certified public
accountants (CPAs) who work closely with investment bankers and other
accountants. They search for assets in order to recover damages awarded
by a court in fraud or theft cases.
Loss Prevention Agents are our detectives who work with retail stores or
hotels are responsible for controlling losses and protecting assets. There are
two subsidiary categories to loss prevention agents, store detectives and
hotel detectives. Store detectives safeguard the assets of retail stores by
apprehending anyone attempting to steal merchandise or destroy store
property. They prevent theft by shoplifters, vendor representatives, delivery
personnel and even store employees. Store detectives also conduct periodic
inspections of stock areas, dressing rooms, and rest rooms, and sometimes
assist in opening and closing the store. They may prepare loss prevention
and security reports for management and testify in court against persons
they apprehend. Hotel detectives protect guests of the establishment from
theft of their belongings and preserve order in hotel restaurants and bars.
They also may keep undesirable individuals, such as known thieves, off the
premises.

Resumes: A resume is essential if you are looking for employment.
Past work history, periods of unemployment, names and addresses
of former employers, references, special qualifications, special
licenses, and education should be listed. Always be truthful on your
resume -- the job you are looking for requires complete honesty
since you will be responsible for keeping other people honest. If
the prospective employer does a background check, as he should,
having a totally honest resume will be a real benefit since a large
number of people exaggerate or lie and most interviewers assume
you are at least "puffing" your experience. It is also advisable to have
taken, or be taking, college courses in police science and
sociology-type subjects to be more effective in dealing with the
public. You will be representing your employer and should present
a professional and knowlegable presence. Keep your resume
updated and do not exaggerate or lie -- you must be above
reproach if you want to be in a position to monitor other people's
honesty. Honesty is not just the best policy, it is the only policy.
Appearance: Always keep your appearance clean and neat.
When you go for interviews it is very important to appear ready to
go to work immediately. Answer questions carefully and always be
truthful, even if the answer is not what the interviwer wants. It is
better to pass up a job that is not right for you than to attempt to
fool the interviewer.

8hr Pre-Assignment Training course: This is a general
introductory course. The first of four courses. Upon successful
completion of this course the guard is issued a training certificate.
Once the application is submitted, the guard has 90 days to
complete the second training course. The second suggested
course is the Special on-site 8hr Training Course.
16hr On-the-Job Training course (OJT): The third training
course required is a sixteen hour on-the-job training course. This
training program should be relevant to the guards duties,
requirements of the work site, and the needs of the employer.
Schools may conduct this training in an approved classroom setting
or at an approved work site which is conducive to learning.
8hr Annual Special Training Course: The fourth required
training program is the Eight Hour Annual In-service course. This
training must be completed each calendar year following
completion of the 16 Hour OJT course. This program is designed
to meet current training needs and refresh or update guards in
changes in the security field. The guard must complete this course
as a prerequisite for renewal of his or her guard registration.

Security Guard Training: Most states require that security guards
be licensed. Requirements vary widely but in most states, applicants
must be at least 18 years old, pass a background check and drug
test, and complete classroom training in such subjects as property
rights, emergency procedures, and detention of suspected
criminals. What kind of training will I need to become a security
guard? Although there are no academic requirements for this field,
a two-year associate's degree program or a one-to-two semester
certificate program in a criminal justice-related area is helpful to
aspiring security guards and surveillance officers. Surveillance
officers receive training in a casino-like atmosphere using
surveillance camera equipment. Armed guards receive formal
training in areas such as weapons retention and laws covering the
use of force. Guards employed by the federal government must
have some experience in the occupation, pass a written
examination, and pass firearms and first aid tests to be certified by
the U.S. General Services Administration. All states have
requirements requiring training to obtain a license (guard card).
For example, in New York the law requires that all security guards
complete three training courses. Armed guards are required to
complete two additional training courses. All courses must be
conducted at approved training schools, by certified instructors.
