My DNA is the debut solo release from Manda who, with her former band Bis, went from being the only unsigned band ever to appear on Top Of The Pops to selling over 100,000 albums in Japan, signing to the Beastie Boys’ Grand Royal label in the States, and soundtracking the popular Powerpuff Girls cartoon series before calling it a day in 2003.
Manda later re-emerged in the critically-acclaimed outfits The Kitchen and Data Panik (also featuring her former Bis bandmates). She played a couple of Bis reunion shows last year and recently guested on a couple of singles with Juno. She may be older and wiser than the Glasgow teenager who first made that TV appearance, but with her solo material she retains all the energy of her early Bis performances. Manda Rin is the real deal. By day, she keeps true to her DiY heritage, running Wee Badgers, the Glasgow-based quality pin button badges company she founded seven years ago.
My DNA finds Manda continuing to dabble in disco-punk, but with a strong guitar pop edge. She cites as influences The Gossip, CSS, New Young Pony Club, To My Boy, Blood Red Shoes and her new favorite band Late Of The Pier. Album is out in the UK on This Is Fake DiY Records and in the US on Retard Disco.
History has served the legacy of Manda’s old band Bis well. The likes of Klaxons and CSS peddle sounds heavily indebted to the Glaswegian trio, while there’s a cult fan base for their pioneering fusion of riot grrrl and disco that refuses to die. ‘Typeface’ sounds akin to Blondie’s ‘Rapture’ reimagined by The Gossip, while ‘Black Book’ is pure out-and-out raunch; My DNA might see Bis’s old singer and keyboard player have the last laugh over those who misjudged her at the time. – NME
