Something You Should Know About Me
My topic is on skateboarding and I love it. Skateboarding is a ton of fun and a cool sport. But you have to work at it to get used to it. In this project I will tell you about skateboarding: Safety tips, History, and Salary Info.
Safety is very important for skateboarding. The first thing you have to remember is always wear safety gear. Like elbow pads, knee pads, and a helmet. Some people don't were safety gear because they think that there to good for safety gear. You should always check your board before you start to ride so you don't break your board or damage it. You shouldn't ride in the streets because just like Reed Menzer you could get hit by a car and die or get serious injuries. When you’re skateboarding and you find a cool spot to skate, you should make sure that you look for a sign that says “No Skateboarding”. Because if you don't look, you could go to jail or Juvenile hall. That's why you should obey the signs. Another thing that you have to remember is to only skate around skaters. The reason why you should do this is because skating around people who don't skateboard isn't right. You should also practice falling in a soft place so when you fall for real you’ll be ready to catch yourself. When loosing your balance you should crouch down on the skateboard to prevent from falling. And when you’re at a skate park and you bail its good to bail on your elbow and knee pads. When you are loosing your balance on a quarter pipes or a half pipes you could use your knee pads to slide down the ramp to prevent injuries. If you are on a rail and you’ve messed up, you have to get as far away from the rail as possible. One way you can is if you jump out as far as possible to prevent from hitting the rail. Those were some of the safety rules you should learn and follow.
Skateboarding first appearance was in the 1950’s. The first skateboards to be around were more like scooters, with an undercarriage consisting or roller skate wheels attached to a two by four. Once the push bar was broken off, the skateboard was born. It wasn’t until the 1950’s, when the surfing craze was in full swing, that people realized that skateboarding could recreate the feeling of riding a wave. The connection with surfing gave skateboards a direction that would change everything like from maneuvers, and style, to terrain, fashion and attitude. It was during that time that modifications were made to the trucks making easier to maneuver. By 1959 the first Roller Derby Skateboard was for sale. In the early 1960’companies like Larry Stevenson’s Makaha and Hobie Alter’s. Hobie began to mass-produce the first true surfing inspired skateboards. Some of the early people that back up surf-style skateboarding including Bill, and Mark Richards, Dannu Bearer, Bruce Logan and Torger Johnson. Skateboarding became very popular almost overnight, and companies were fighting to keep up with demand. Over fifty millions skateboards were sold within a three year period, and the first skateboard contest was held in Hermosa Beach, CA. Then in 1965 a slew of so-called safety experts pronounced skateboarding unsafe - urging stores not to sell them and parents not to buy them. The skateboards popularity died as soon as it started, and the sport entered its first slump. Skateboarding would experience other slumps in its history. This pattern of peaks and valleys would come to be known as the “ten-year cycle,” although the slumps weren’t exactly ten years apart. It was during the first slump that invented the kick-tail, and the first generation of skateboarders laid down the foundation of tricks and style. However, they were still largely limited by equipment. Then in 1973 the urethane wheel was invented, revolutionizing the sport. The new wheels provide much better movement and speed and, put into the new skateboards specific trucks, it allowed skateboarders to push the difficulty maneuvers to new levels. Trick’s now consists of surfing maneuvers done on flat ground or on banks. Empty swimming pools and cylindrical pipes were exploited as terrain for the first time.
Today a skateboarder can make anywhere from 1,000 to 10,000 a month. These earning’s based on winnings, depending on how well a skater places in any given competition and how many competition’s a skater competes in during any month. Most skaters’ who are sponscered also earn a monthly salary from one or more companies, which sponsor’s them as team riders. This is a considerable change from the past when pro skaters had to work a regular job as well as compete according to Bostick. Skateboarding can be fun for all ages above two years old, but the majority of pro skateboarders are about from there early teens to there early twenties. Most skateboarders don’t practice or train. They don’t even talk about there diet. Skaters just do what they love to do: skate, all the time. Skateboarding is fun, and when having fun is the goal, it never seems like training. Of course many skateboarders do other things for fun as well, such as surfing and snowboarding, which is actually extreme sports cross-training
