"America's Most Dangerous Kult"
The project began in late 1987, when kindred spirits Groovie Mann and Buzz McCoy met in Chicago and started conjuring up the plot to a thriller “b movie” entitled My Life With The Thrill Kill Kult. Though the film idea didn't get very far, their experimental soundtrack which was to accompany the picture was eventually licensed as an EP to local indie label, Wax Trax Records.
The duo decided to turn their aspirations of celluloid into a live performance piece, and worked on putting together a band by the same name. They also created a back-up trio of bodacious and sultry singers/dancers known collectively as The Bomb Gang Girlz. In July of 1988, the boys and girls went into the studio to record their first full-length album, the ominous I See Good Spirits And I See Bad Spirits. The response to the LP was overwhelming, and it soon established Thrill Kill Kult as one of America’s premier "industrial/disco" bands..
They followed up that cd with two more for Wax Trax - the psychotic and dark Confessions Of A Knife (1990), and the sassy, depraved, Sexplosion in 1991. The later album spawned the alternative radio chart-topping hit "Sex On Wheelz", and soon the major labels came knocking. TKK signed to a fledgling Interscope Records in 1992, whereby releasing the techno inspired 13 Above The Night in 1993. The album also featured new bass player Levi Levi, and guests vocalists, “poet-vamp” Lydia Lunch and “house-diva” Shawn Christopher. In 1995 the band added more guitars and horns to their sound, creating a groovy, surf/punk rock opus entitled Hit & Run Holiday.
Oddly enough, Groovie and Buzz soon found themselves back in the world of film making, writing material for an array of movies, like director Paul Verhoeven's naughty "Showgirls", animator Ralph Bakshi's "Cool World", the South Park guys' comedic "BASEketball", "The Flintstones Movie", and even the cult classic "The Crow" - in which the band also performs, making their silver screen debut! Their music has also been featured in dozens of trailers, network tv and cable shows.
MLWTTKK continues to tour extensively, and has shared billing with the likes of Souixsie And The Banshees, Lords Of Acid, KMFDM and Ministry, to name but a few. They are currently licensed to Rykodisc, and even now - 20 years later - continue to record and produce albums. 2005 brought about the release of a sleazy homage to the 70’s disco era called Gay, Black and Married, and this year’s latest endeavor, the seedy, sultry The Filthiest Show In Town was released in April, with a tour to follow this Fall 2007.
With their one of a kind approach and unique “industrial-disco-punk-funk” style, My Life With The Thrill Kill Kult have certainly stood the test of time, and are true pioneers of today’s alternative music scene.
Thank you all, new friends and old. Those who forever "Ride The Mindway" and continue to travel with us down this glamorous rocky road of life!
