I chose the background as that of an alien world because I am very much an alien or outsider visiting various communities on earth, like the stickam community. Due to my psychological disorder, I am effectively blind to the social aspects of life. In a world of 6 billion people I am effectively alone. Compared to normal people, I live in an alien world that consists of me, things, and ideas. There is nothing else in my world. There are no communities of people to become a part of, no friends to make, no people to be attached to, and no people at all…
Hi, I am the user mystyc1. It is meant to be read as "mystic one", but I also respond to "mystic", "mystic1", and "mystyc". It is not meant to be read as "mysty C", "misty sea", nor as "my stick". The name itself is derived from a character (the mystic) in a fictional book I am writing that has become so increasingly complicated that I have been working on it for the last 10 years. In the early days of the world wide web, months after it became public (1993/1994), I needed to choose my first username for my first internet account (an AOL account). I wanted "the_mystic", but that was already taken, so I deliberately mispelled it, and the mispelling has stuck over time. I later dropped the "the" prefix as such titles quickly went out of fashion. As the internet grew, my chances of finding the username "mystyc" availible became increasingly unlikely. Typically it is taken by some unimaginative woman named Mysty. And thus the username "mystyc1" was born.
In the spring of 2007 I was diagnosed with Asperger's syndrome accompanied with a sensory integration dysfunction. Additionally I have ADHD and am taking medication for that (Stratterra). Asperger's syndrome is a disorder on the autism spectrum of disorders that causes deficiencies in social communication and interaction. In laymans terms I am basically a "social retard". This disorder makes seeming simple aspects of social interaction difficult for me. I also have a tendency to misunderstand social situations or to respond to social situations in unusual ways. I came to stickam as a form of therapy; in order to develop new coping mechanisms for dealing with my deficiencies in social situations. I apologize in advance for all those that I might unintentionally offend in the future. On Stickam, I have begun to encounter a variety of new social situations for which I do not yet have any coping mechanisms, and as part of the learning experience I have and will continue to get things very wrong. For that I am sorry.
I am a graduate student in physics working towards my PhD. I also do research in philosophy and enjoy watching anime. I tend to refer to myself as a “social retard” as it is at least superficially true. Being on stickam has made me particularly self-conscientious of my age and appearance to the extent that I have a tendency to view these aspects negatively. My observations have suggested that I am more likely a person that someone might call “hideous” or “ugly” rather than the person that someone would flirt with. However at the same time my Asperger’s Syndrome has made it nearly impossible to determine if someone is flirting with me. Nonetheless, I have trouble determine to what extent my judgment is in error, and to what extent it is accurate. My near complete inability to determine if I am being flirted with or if someone likes me is likely the largest factor that contributes to me being a virgin at 27 years of age. Therefore I welcome help on any of the following issues: *How to flirt.
*How to tell if someone is flirting with me or not.
*How to tell if someone likes me.
*How to tell if someone hates me.
*To what extent I am attractive or ugly and if that can be changed.
Due to my many deficiencies, I tend to consider myself the “ugly internet friend” amongst my friends on stickam. No one has ever called me this, but one of my many difficulties with social communication includes an inability to detect sincerity. Normally an individual will use non-verbal social cues for this, but this is not an option for me. In effect, if you do not want to lead me to believe that I am your “ugly internet friend”, then you might have to demonstrate that in a very direct or non-obvious way, or you may have to bang the idea into my head for I will not otherwise getting. In a sense, that is the sort of “stupid” I am.
Just as much as I am deficient in social situations, I excel at analytical reasoning. Feel free to engage me in any topic that interests me. However be forewarned that once you have got me started talking about something that interests me, I will continue on, effectively, indefinitely. Thus, the unfortunate reality is that to engage me in such a manner is to request such treatment. This is because I exist in a world of ideas, and will jump at the chance to interact with familiar “things”.
For the exception of trouble with the second law of thermodynamics, current physics does not deem time travel impossible. However, it likewise does not provide a mechanism for it either. This is a very interesting situation as, with other traditionally sci-fi physics topics, current physics deems them impossible (like faster than light travel, free energy devices, anti-gravity, etc...). This does not mean that they will always be impossible in the view of physics, but they are at least impossible in the domain of empirically observable phenomena within which our current theories hold.
It is likely that both the validity and the mechanism (if there such a mechanism exists) for time travel will be the province of "quantum gravity" which is the name for the proposed theory that deals with empirically observable phenomena where both gravity and quantum mechanics must be taken into account. This is the domain of the really small and really "heavy" (or massive/energetic), like the singularity of a black hole. Thus the most popular speculative idea for time travel involves wormholes. That is, just as both mouths of the wormholes exist at different points in space, they can also exist at different points in time. Even more speculatively, they could exist in different universes, but since the physics of wormholes is in the realm of quantum gravity, thus all this speculation could be meaningless or simply wrong.
Another speculative mode for time travel would be a Tipler Cylinder. This is essentially a massive long rotating cylinder (arguably infinitely long), whose mass is large enough to have significant "frame dragging". Frame dragging is a gravitational phenomena where space-time is literally dragged along with a rotating body in the direction of rotation. The time travel effect arises from essentially moving the space-time near the Tipler cylinder to meet you, instead of the other way around (in this case, meeting a point in space-time from before you began your journey). Like wormholes, construction of these objects on a practical scale (as in a finite scale) would likely require exotic mass of negative energy (as in, it falls up in a gravitational field). No such mass is known to exist nor can it be modeled by any current theories.
Step 1: Gather data (observations about something that is unknown, unexplained, or new )
Step 2: Hypothesize an explanation for those observations.
Step 3: Deduce a consequence of that explanation. (A prediction) Formulate an experiment to see if the predicted consequence is observed.
Step 4: Wait for corroboration. If there is corroboration, go to step 3. If not, the hypothesis is falsified. Go to step 2.
Is this really how science works? Paul Feyerabend disagreed. “According to Feyerabend, new theories came to be accepted not because of their accord with scientific method, but because their supporters made use of any trick - rational, rhetorical or ribald - in order to advance their cause. Without a fixed ideology, or the introduction of religious tendencies, the only approach which does not inhibit progress (using whichever definition one sees fit) is "anything goes": ``'anything goes' is not a 'principle' I hold... but the terrified exclamation of a rationalist who takes a closer look at history.’’ Against Method: Outline of an Anarchistic Theory of Knowledge (1975)

Feburary 20th 2008: I will officially be taking a break from stickam and similar aspects of my therapy. I will be working with my doctor and others in other aspects of my therapy while I focus on my school work, research, and teaching. You might still see me on, but this period of me not being on stickam will continue a little bit longer. I am just not in a good place and will not be able to handle another bad situation, as is commonly found on stickam. Feel free to drop me a message on stickam or an instant message on one of my IM clients, if you are on my list (and if I am on).
General Information
Although you probably cannot see it very well, the background image for my profile is an artist's conception of what the surface of Gliese 581c looks like. Gliese 581c is the most earth like extra solar planet discovered to date. Its mass is roughly 1.5 times that of the earth, and is located in the "habitable zone" in orbit around the star Gliese 581 (a red dwarf star about 20 light years from earth). If the planet contains water then it would be capable of supporting life.I chose the background as that of an alien world because I am very much an alien or outsider visiting various communities on earth, like the stickam community. Due to my difficulties with these things, please do not pretend to flirt with me as a joke because I cannot tell the difference (and may not even identify it as flirting at all). (Here is some random physics fact or topic. I will update this sporadically and randomly.)“Today’s” topic is Time Travel! How might we do it?
It is a common joke amongst physicists that if you want to do research on time travel and get funded for it, you must refer to your research as "researching closed time-like loops" (or closed time-like curves) rather than "researching time travel".For the exception of trouble with the second law of thermodynamics, current physics does not deem time travel impossible. However, it likewise does not provide a mechanism for it either. This is a very interesting situation as, with other traditionally sci-fi physics topics, current physics deems them impossible (like faster than light travel, free energy devices, anti-gravity, etc...). Interesting philosophy
(Here is some random philosophical idea or topic. I will update this sporadically and randomly.)Today’s topic is The Scientific Method! What is the best statement of the scientific method?
If you went to school in the United States, then you might be familiar with the “hypothetico-deductive model”, though probably not by name. You may be familiar with it in its following form:Step 1: Gather data (observations about something that is unknown, unexplained, or new )
Step 2: Hypothesize an explanation for those observations.
Step 3: Deduce a consequence of that explanation. (A prediction) Formulate an experiment to see if the predicted consequence is observed.
