I am Neuromancer and I am a Synesthete. What is a Synesthete? One who has synesthesia. Synesthesia is an involuntary joining in which the real information of one sense is accompanied by a perception in another sense. In addition to being involuntary, this additional perception is regarded by the synesthete as real, often outside the body, instead of imagined in the mind's eye. It also has some other interesting features that clearly separate it from artistic fancy or purple prose. Its reality and vividness are what make synesthesia so interesting in its violation of conventional perception. Synesthesia is also fascinating because logically it should not be a product of the human brain, where the evolutionary trend has been for increasing separation of function anatomically. There are many forms of synesthesia such as colored-hearing, colored-grapheme. In other words, some synesthetes can see music. About 80% of the synesthete population have the colored-grapheme form. This mean they see letters, numbers or both in a specific color, texture regardless the color ink its printed on. Also, one a color has been synestheticaly binded to a letter, it stays that way for life and does not change. (Personally, I do not think that is entirely true and the colors could change - My research are coming up with anecedotal evidence that this is not an ironclad rule) I have several forms all which falls into 1 percentile or less of the total known synesthete population. When I see colors and lights, I also hear them. Color brightness, intentesity, contrast ect influences the tonal pitch I would hear. Looking at lighted objects in motion, its pitch would also change corresponding to its motion. Also more than that., actually more accurate I have Vision to Sound synesthesia. I hear everything I see. If anything I see changes in my visual field, I would sound associating with the changes. I also have limited Colored Hearing, Touch to Sound, and to lesser degree Taste and Smell to Sound. I be a club listening to music, I would be hearing all the club lighings, evey twirling glowsitck I see I also hear its music. Sometimes, I would see the music projected into space as blobs mosly blue in color. Sometimes, I would also hear the blob. Recently August 2006 at the Univerisity of Texas Medical Center, 2nd Annual International Synesthesia Conference at the Hannover Medical Center, Hannover Germany with a music presentation performing two tracks along with my lecture. The music presentation had gotten me interviewed at Radio Hannover and Radio Berlin. I will also be speaking at upcoming synesthesia conference in Florida later in January.
