| My name is Becky. I like to Boogie. Bubblegum & Other Delights is my Internet radio show and it airs every other Tuesday from 7-9 p.m. PST on KillRadio.org. I guess this is the place where I will type notes or updates. What is Bubblegum & Other Delights? BG&OD is a love song to the three-minute pop song, an appreciation for the junk food of pop music. Everything from The Archies to the Zoo Revue, New, with a little Ramones and Sweet thrown in for good measure. While I laugh a lot during the show, my love is not ironic. I play the role of the pop apologist and see genuine art in this music. In the same way that I don't eat Twinkies for dinner (every night), it is not the exclusive music I listen to. I like to think that even my pea-sized, Mad-magazine-addled brain is expansive enough to take in the lyrics of Bob Dylan AND Joey Levine, another talented nasally noisemaker who sang and wrote "Yummy Yummy Yummy." Having to make a choice between the two seems like a false dichotomy. Anyway, more candy! In my arguments and musical editing, I try to show how Bubblegum and pop borrow from (and lend to) other musical genres such as surf, novelty, garage, soul, rock, gospel, punk, etc. and how it in itself is a valid artform. But enuf with the teaching, this is a show about feeling, connecting, and living in the moment. Here's to Keeping It Simple--and--Stupid. Becky |
