Welcome to Cebu!
Cebu – or “Sugbo” as it was once called – maybe the Philippine’s second international gateway, but it has managed to retain its rustic charm and colorful traditions. It is the country’s busiest port and a bustling center for export industries, with a population of close to a million people. Yet the city maintains a cosmopolitan vibe without the maddening pace of a growing metropolis.
History and culture buffs can immerse themselves in the island’s Spanish heritage by visiting a number of landmarks; Fort San Pedro (the oldest fortress in the Philippines); Magellan’s Cross (where famed navigator Ferdinand Magellan met his untimely demise in the hands of local chieftain Lapu-lapu); Casa Gorordo Museum; the Basilica Minore Del Sto. Niño (which houses the oldest religious relic in the country, the Sto. Niño de Cebu).
A haven for souvenir shopping, Cebu specializes in exquisite shellcraft, handmade guitars, and exotic home décor. Malls like SM Cebu and Ayala Center Cebu rival their main branches in variety, quality, and interesting bargains.
But what sets Cebu apart from other destinations is its proximity to an exciting number of leisure getaways and adventure trips. Nearby Mactan Island boasts of world-class beach resorts.
The island is also famous for its incredible dive locations and pristine beaches. Beyond the city’s limits, visitors can choose from a vast array of diving destinations. Moalboal on the west coast and Malapascua Island in the northern tip teem with spectacular reef formations and colorful marine life. Many dive centers organize underwater safaris to these destinations.
Welcome Visitor!
