| Dear concerned Moderately religious person, I wish I could be as optimistic as you in thinking everything will be fine if we just live and let live, I really wish I could believe that. Since the religious right in this country, indeed, across the globe has shown that it is incapable of the same compassion. It has been statistically shown that around 70% of the population of this country believe that Jesus will return within their life time. That means 70% of Americans think the world will end inside the next 40-50 years, and some of them are even looking forward to it and would do everything in their power to expedite the process . How can we even begin to plan for a sustainable society when so many of it's people are bent on destruction? Now, with Iran on the verge of Nuclear capability, and given it's overwhelmingly apocalyptic world view, we are entering an age of Crusaders all over again. Only this time it really does have global implications. Let's not forget the Bush clan. The current president says "God" speaks to him, and his father has been quoted as saying, "...I don't think atheists can be called patriots, or even citizens. This is one nation under God...". Not to mention the "faith based initiatives" Bush Jr. has put in place that give federal funding to churches. This kind of trampling of the bill of rights cannot be ignored, but most Americans choose to. Can you honestly tell me these things don't scare you? Do you honestly think we are better off to bury our heads in the sand and hope everything turns out fine? Could you honestly tell me that religion doesn't poison everything? From the apocalyptic religious world view, from the unending violence, from the limitless bigotry and hatred of those not of their own creed, to the human tragedies it imposes, religion is, by all definitions, unhealthy for human survival. It is an attempt to explain the world that was thought up in the infancy of our species. With all the scientific advances we have accomplished, we no longer need it to explain the universe. In short, it is extremely outdated, and we would do well to be rid of it. That is why we fight it. That is why we refuse to tolerate it. Indeed, that is why we do what we do. If you still think "it doesn't affect me, so why should I care so much?" just do a search for the Westborough Baptist Church, and tell me then that you are not outraged! www.wkeafm.com You can hear me doing the weather every weekend at 50 past the hour.
